The personal ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross was established for Australia on June 15, 2012, by Pope Benedict XVI. This follows ordinariates that have been established in the United Kingdom and the United States, following the promulgation of his apostolic constitution Anglicanorum Coetibus on November 4, 2009.
On this day, the former Bishop Harry Entwistle of the Traditional Anglican Communion was ordained a Catholic priest by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe, SDB, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Perth, assuming his new role as ordinary. Monsignor Entwistle (as he is now known) will have geographic jurisdiction encompassing the whole of Australia, similar to a bishop, and is now a member of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference.
Below are two interviews, including one with Monsignor Entwistle, on this new structure established by the Church for Anglican converts who wish to retain some of their identity.
