Letter #65, 2025, Friday, September 12: Erika Kirk
Today I saw this article from the National Catholic Register about Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk.
Charlie was assassinated two days ago in Utah at the age of 31, leaving behind Erika and a little girl, just 3 years old, and a little boy, about 1 and a half years old.
A massive clamor of words has arisen around this case, which some are characterizing as the most significant political/cultural assassination since the assassinations of the two Kennedy brothers, John and Robert, and of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, in the 1960s.
In the midst of the clamor, the reflection on prayer of Charlie’s widow, Erika, seemed to me so thoughtful and moving that I thought I should share it with you.

As millions across the country mourn the loss of Charlie Kirk, many are learning more about his family, including his wife, Erika Frantzve.
Pictures are circulating online, showing the family visiting the National Basilica in Washington, D.C., along with photos of Charlie at Mass. (link)
On a recent episode of his podcast, Kirk, an evangelical Christian who recently spoke about the Blessed Mother, mentioned how he was close to Father Don Kline, pastor of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Scottsdale, Arizona, and how his wife was baptized Catholic. Erika attended Notre Dame Preparatory High School in Scottsdale.

Erika, who was crowned Miss Arizona in 2012, is a former NCAA women’s basketball player at Regis University, according to her personal website. She also started a nonprofit, Everyday Heroes. Many of her social-media posts contain verses from Scripture.
She has also spoken openly about her marriage with Charlie and how it was shaped by faith, recently revealing that the two always prayed for each other.
During a 2023 media appearance, she spoke openly about how becoming a mother had influenced her faith, saying, “You see the Bible in a different way, and your relationship with God in a different way, when you become a parent.”
Their first child, a daughter, was born in August 2022; and in May 2024, the couple welcomed their second child, a son.
Erika also hosts her own podcast, Midweek Rise Up, covering issues ranging from parenting and motherhood to faith.
In a post earlier this year, she spoke openly about prayer, accompanying her comments by writing:
Prayer isn’t always words whispered into the heavens.
Sometimes, it’s silence.
A still heart. A quiet soul. A surrendered spirit.
You don’t always need to speak — sometimes, you just need to be still and know that He is God.
Meditate on His Word like it’s oxygen.
Don’t let your heart grow numb; don’t let your eyes skim over sacred sentences you’ve read a hundred times.
This isn’t just a book. This is the living, breathing voice of your Savior.
Treat it as holy.
Stop multitasking with the holy.
Don’t “habit stack” Jesus.
Drop everything.
And worship.
This is not productivity.
This is presence.
This is sacred.
Be intentional.
Be still.
Be postured in awe.
Because you’re not meeting with a character in one of the greatest books every written …
You’re meeting with the King of Glory.
Please join us in keeping Charlie, Erika and the entire Kirk family in your prayers!
